WhatsApp, the world’s most popular messaging app with over 2 billion monthly active users, constantly updates its interface to meet user needs. One of the latest changes that’s grabbing attention is the app’s new requirement for users to enter their birthdate.
Launched in November 2009, WhatsApp revolutionized instant messaging by leveraging the internet for real-time communication. Over the years, its interface has evolved significantly to keep up with technological advancements and user demands. Until now, creating a WhatsApp account hasn’t been restricted by age, but a new beta test suggests this might be changing.
According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is developing a new feature that will ask users for their birthdate, effectively revealing their age. Currently, this feature is in its testing phase and will initially roll out in select countries with specific legal requirements.
“This requirement is set to launch in certain countries later. This update likely responds to recent legislation in some U.S. states, including Texas, mandating that online services verify user ages this year. In these states, users will need to enter their birthdate to use WhatsApp, and once entered, the birthdate cannot be changed,” reports the site.
Although this update is still under development for the beta version of WhatsApp for Android 2.24.5.18, it’s already known that users’ birthdates won’t be visible to others upon launch. “This change is purely for regulatory compliance and won’t affect the privacy and security of user interactions on WhatsApp,” explains the report. It’s also speculated that this requirement might be extended to other regions as their laws dictate.
WhatsApp Embraces AI for New Features

These will include the ability to create AI-generated profile pictures and generate images from scratch to send in conversations. These new options will be available in the same menu where you can send documents, photos, audio, and more.
